Following the decision by Michel Kazatchkine to step down from the Global Fund, the Alliance reflects on his recent field visit to Ukraine where he leaves a lasting impression - and looks ahead at the task ahead for Gabriel Jaramillo, the new General Manager who is tasked to accelerate the fight against the three pandemics.
Kazatchkine steps down
In a statement released to Board members of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on Tuesday 24 January, Michel Kazatchkine announced that he will step down from his position as Executive Director on 16 March 2012.
He said: “For the last ten years, the Global Fund has been my passion and my most important undertaking. I have been deeply committed to helping the Global Fund achieve its vision of a world free of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.”

Alliance report on the Global Fund warns millions will go without HIV services
The Alliance is warning of an impending HIV/AIDS crisis following its assessment on the impact of the $2 billion shortfall announced by the Global Fund last year.
Millions of people will now have to go without HIV services and many may die waiting for treatment as a result of the funding cuts the Global Fund has had to make, according to the Alliance’s report, ‘Don’t Stop Now’.

Kenyan delegation learns about needle exchange programmes in Mauritius
In September 2011 the Alliance Technical Support Hub for Eastern Europe and Central Asia organised a field visit to Mauritius for a Kenyan delegation of civil society and government representatives to learn about needle exchange and other harm reduction programmes for drug users.
The visitors from Kenya participated in the Mauritian Conference on Harm Reduction and visited harm reduction programmes run by Collectif Urgence Toxida (CUT), the first NGO to implement needle exchange programmes in Mauritius. For more information about CUT visit their Facebook page.
